What we are learning
Check back to see updates on what we are learning!
Comprehension - We will be working with point of view the next couple weeks. Students will be able to identify the points of view of the narrator, character and author of a text. They will also be able to distinguish those points of view from their own.
Math - We are continuing our study of fractions. Students are learning how fractions show up on number lines, and will be able to represent fractions on number line diagrams. We will also begin comparing fractions using a number line.
Writing - We started studying informative writing last week, and will continue working on that this week. Students are practicing using a nonfiction text to help them write an informative piece. We are working on determining importance while reading and researching, and summarizing information into a paragraph. We will continue our work on informative writing for the rest of the school year, and will integrate it into our unit on market economy that will start later in April.

I hope everyone had a great Spring Break! Here is a look at what we will be focusing on for the next few weeks. Fiction Block - Using our Junior Great Books stories, we will be explaining how a text's illustrations contribute to what is being conveyed by the words.
Math Block - We are jumping into a new module that we will be working on until the beginning of May! Our focus will be on understanding fraction concepts.
Nonfiction/Science/Social Studies - Since Iowa Assessments are coming up quickly, we will be focusing on test taking strategies and test prep for the next two weeks. Our class will be using a baseball theme for this, so your child may mention Spring Training!
*We will also start rotating classrooms three days a week during our Reading Flex Block. This time is meant to help students who are struggling with reading fluency have very intentional targeted practicing time, while students who are doing well with reading fluency will be participating in literature circles. Because of this change, our Library schedule will be changing. I will let you know as soon as I find out our new Library time/day. Fiction Reading - During our fiction block, we have been working on summarizing the story (both orally and in writing). Along with this, we have reviewed the sequence of a text, and have practiced pulling key details out of stories. Beginning next week, we will also begin talking about the theme and moral of the texts we read. Once students are able to confidently identify these, we will work on incorporating them into our summaries.
Math - We wrapped up our unit that focused on area, and now we have moved into a short unit on data representation and interpretation. Students are learning different ways to graph data, as well as how to read different types of graphs. This unit will only be a couple of weeks, but the students are really loving the chance to survey their friends and graph data!
Nonfiction Reading/Science - Over the last several weeks, we have been working on identifying the main idea and key details of a text. Next week we will begin focusing on identifying cause and effect relationships in the texts that we read. The science content that we will be using focuses on environmental changes, and the effects they have on the organisms that live there.
Fiction Reading - We just finished up talking about characters' motivations, traits and feelings, and will be moving into asking and answering questions about what we are reading. The file below shows our scale for this literature standard.
Math - We are currently working on understanding how to find the area of a figure. Students have experienced strategies such as counting square units, tiling a figure, and multiplying a figure's length by its width. The file below shows our scale for this math standard.
In Science, we have been learning about plant and animal extinction, as well as the benefits for animals that live in group. Students have learned different causes of extinction (over-hunting, climate change, no food source, etc). This week we will be learning more about fossils and what we can learn from them.
Students worked very hard on Thursday to describe a character's motivations, traits and feelings! Our next step will be describing how these things influence the sequence of events.
We tracked our learning and our wonders to build our comprehension as we read The Story of Ruby Bridges today!
